Dr. Kim's Secrets to Transforming the Employee:

"Why the Person at the Interview is not the Same Person in the Workplace"

Perception is dangerous. When we hire someone we have the tendency to make personal judgments, final decisions and future expectations on what they are wearing, their level of education, and the way they carry their self. Most of us have been guilty of basing our entire trust and expectations on what we see instead of what we actually know. Through these primary four areas we pre-maturely decide what type of worker they will be and how they will get along with others based solely on what we physically see. Perception is dangerous.

And once we start working with them many times we find that what appeared as confident in the interview becomes arrogance three months in the job. Or management will often complain that the new employee seemed so much like a "go getter" and so promising through the screening but quickly settled into a mediocre work ethic like the majority of the staff. Although there are a lot of explanations of why this is, one major contributor is that often times we have no idea what our employees really want from us.  Most management feel that the number one thing that their employees want is more money. And although this is always very important and the reason for many disgruntled staff, it is never the thing that feeds the soul of the employee

As we work with others it is so important to realize that regardless of how educated and sophisticated people may seem to be - we are dealing with real live humans with real live feelings. The staff's ego and past experiences have shaped their present belief system. And as we grasp onto the fact that most people are at a maturity level well beneath their biological age, it is easier to understand what our employees really want is nothing tangible.

Regardless of age, education or profession, the number one thing that most employees want is to be appreciated both privately and in a large group. They want to feel that what they do is not only noticed but that it is openly discussed and not made a secret. They want to be told that they are valuable and that they are counted on. And more importantly they want to feel that their management team is bold, honest and willing to go out on a limb to let others know of their good service.

Although this may seem small, petty and unnecessary it is the key that feeds the soul. We must remember that we are dealing with real live humans with real live feelings. As leaders, team players, and co-workers, we must realize we often will have to satisfy the employees internal needs before we will ever get an exceptional outer result.
